Degree Programs

Master of Divinity
A program of theological education and practical training for pastoral ministry in the Roman Catholic Church.

M.A. & M.A.B.L.
The M.A. is granted by the Jesuit School and the Graduate Theological Union. The M.A.B.L. is designed for persons wishing to concentrate in biblical languages.

Combined Master of Arts / Master of Divinity
Qualified students may enroll jointly in the Master of Arts / Master of Divinity program offered through the Jesuit School and the Graduate Theological Union.

Master of Theological Studies
This program allows students to combine general theological courses with a chosen area of specialization that addresses subjects crucial to the evolution of the Church.

Master of Theology
A one-year program in advanced theology that allows students who have already received the Master of Divinity degree to pursue an area of specialized interest.

Licentiate in Sacred Theology
An ecclesiastical degree designed to expand the expertise of those who serve religious communities and dioceses and who teach in churches and seminaries.

Doctor of Sacred Theology
In this ecclesiastical program, students complete their scientific theological formation, broaden their knowledge of a chosen discipline and conduct original research.

Bachelor of Sacred Theology
A three-year Roman Catholic ecclesiastical degree granted by the Jesuit School that ensures a solid grounding in the whole of Catholic doctrine by developing in the students a solid knowledge of theology, a method of doing theological research, a personal synthesis of theology, and a committed insight into the Mystery of Christ and the guiding presence of His Spirit in the history of Salvation.

Doctoral Student Affiliation with the Jesuit School
Although the Ph.D. and Th.D. programs are offered by the GTU, admitted students are welcome to apply for affiliation with the Jesuit School. Affiliation does not affect any academic requirements, and the degree is ultimately granted by the GTU. Doctoral students are encouraged to participate in all social and liturgical activities at the Jesuit School.

preparing the eucharistic table

During an internship Gilbert Sunghera, S.J., an M.Div. student at the Jesuit School, used his skills as a professional architect to help redesign St. Patrick's Church in West Oakland. Because the congregation is bicultural, their customs concerning reverence differ. Gilbert worked with the African American and Latino parishioners to understand the kind of worship space each group wanted, and to plan renovations that honored--and harmonized--the wishes of both communities.
