Instituto Hispano

Hispanic Institute in
Theological and Pastoral Studies

Jesuit School of Theology classroom The Hispanic Institute in Theological and Pastoral Studies is an intensive two-week summer course in theology and pastoral ministry for those who are actively engaged in, or wish to prepare for, ministry in Hispanic communities.

Since its beginning in 1988, the Institute has provided courses in theology and pastoral ministry to Hispanic ministers to deepen their understanding of Scripture, theology, inculturation and ministerial issues. These courses are taught in Spanish.

The Certificate in Hispanic Theological and Pastoral Studies is conferred in recognition of three consecutive summers of study in the Institute. All participants receive a Certificate of Completion and five Continuing Education Units (CEUs) at the end of each summer session.

Graduate Courses of the Hispanic Institute will be offered to graduates of the summer Hispanic Institute as well as other students who wish to pursue theological studies in an academic setting and from a Latino-Hispanic perspective. These courses are designed as a logical "next step" for students who have already completed the basic program (or similar program) and who want to consider pursuing a degree program in theology. If a cohort of students develops, we hope for a graduate degree program in Hispanic Ministry.

These intensive summer courses will be taught by a team of reputable theology professors. Each class section will meet for four hours, five days a week for two weeks. The language of instruction will be English and the faculty will make every effort to accommodate the needs of students whose first language is Spanish. Students seeking academic credit will be required to complete reading assignments prior to beginning classes. Likewise, after the class meetings conclude, students will have two weeks to complete the final assignment, either a research paper or other project undertaken with faculty supervision.
